Kuro Tarangire/Tarangire National Park

Kuro Tarangire is set amid a grove of Acacia and Kigelia trees close to the Tarangire River – often a dry, sandy course snaking through this quiet area of the park. The area sees the rhythmic movement of wildlife as it traverses the park from the hills in the west to the swamps on the eastern side.

Conscious of wanting to experience this place in a way that harmonizes with the natural tempo, without overpowering it, Nomad has created a camp with a light footprint.  Six light and stylish safari rooms are complete with comfortable beds, en-suite indoor and outdoor bucket and flushing loos. They rest amongst the trees with views over the African bush. You will gather to share meals and relax under the cool grass thatch of the open-sided lounge and dining area which is furnished with hides and canvas, brought to life with a touch of colorful and tactile textiles, all inspired by the Maasai.

ACTIVITIES

Game drives, walking safaris and night drives are all on offer from Kuro Tarangire. This park is well known for big herds of buffalo, elephant that stand picturesquely beneath the spreading branches of baobabs and prides of lazy lion sprawled in the shade of acacia scrub. The muted colors of Africa are frequently lit up by the bright reds and yellows of barbets, starlings and bee-eaters; there are over 550 species of birds here. Sometimes we’ll take advantage of our freedom to venture out at night for this is when elusive creatures also choose to softly tread the trails. Few things are more exhilarating than catching a glimpse of the patterned flank of a leopard as it slinks through the grass beside our car.

ROOM CONFIGURATION

Six light and stylish safari rooms are complete with comfortable beds, en-suite bucket shower and flushing loo. They rest amongst the trees with views over the African bush and although they are extremely comfortable and beautiful, they never detract from the main event, which is out there.

One family unit at Kuro Tarangire is made up of two full-size en suite rooms, connected by a canvas corridor that zips closed at night. Ideal for families with younger children to have access to mum and dad after dark, without the need to head outside.

Entamanu Ngorongoro/Ngorongoro Crater

Perched high on the wild side of the Ngorongoro Crater rim, Nomad’s Entamanu Ngorongoro is a thoughtfully designed refuge in this elemental place, from which to explore the unique highland environment. Surrounded by the soaring peaks of dormant volcanic hills and the ebb and flow of Maasai pastoralist life, this is a place to explore beyond the hustle and bustle of the tourist trail. Not only to visit the Crater, but to understand it as part of a wider environment.

Seven large en-suite tents, two of which are family units made cozy with heaters, warm textiles and sheepskin look across the iconic Crater view, with a backdrop of ancient acacia trees. The style here is as unique as the location – everything carefully handcrafted locally to the highest standard.

Located in Northern Tanzania, the Ngorongoro Crater is best known for its natural beauty and abundance of diverse wildlife; which makes it one of Africa’s most popular safari destinations. Surrounded by Tanzania’s highlands, this UNESCO-listed crater is said to be the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Visitors can look forward to spotting the world-renowned Big Five and a host of other wildlife species including large herds of zebra and wildebeest. It is famed as one of Tanzania’s best tourist attractions offering visitors an array of wonderful activities including excellent bird watching, trekking, wildlife viewing, mountain biking and visiting a local Maasai village. Don’t miss the opportunity to jump on an excursion to the magnificent Olduvai Gorge.

ACTIVITIES

  • Game drives onto the crater floor
  • Sundowners on the rim
  • Guided walks along the crater rim and in surrounding highlands with a Masai guide.
  • Masai boma – visit a local boma to experience the Masai traditional ways of life

ROOM CONFIGURATION

There’s nothing tame about this location – the high altitude sun has some real heat and the wind can be biting and sometimes noisy. The seven rooms, two of which are family units ideal for families with children, have been carefully designed with this in mind. Think textured wool, down duvets and heaters which provide warmth in the sleeping tents against the chilly nights, as well as fully openable fronts to let the breeze in when it warms up during the day. Big verandas wrap around the front of the rooms and the ideal place to sit and marvel at the view. All of the rooms have views into the Crater, with immense Serengeti views to be enjoyed from the other side of camp. The interiors are of sustainably sourced wood and everything within the camp is locally sourced and made by talented Tanzanian artisans.

Lamai Serengeti/Northern Serengeti

Lamai Serengeti sits tucked amongst the rocks of Kogakuria Kopje with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, only a few miles from where the wildebeest cross the Mara River. For roughly a quarter of the year, between late July and October, this is where you’ll find the migration. Right here, on our doorstep. For the rest of the year, it is wild Serengeti with all the resident game of the Masai Mara but without the people.

Each of the rooms is designed to fit into the complex geometry of the kopje and to make the most of this sensational location, its views and its natural space and light. The rooms are a blend of canvas, plaster and natural poles.

The vast, rolling savannah of the Northern Serengeti, is known as the hub of the great migration. The landscape is characterized by vast stretches of savannah interspersed with acacia trees and riverine woodlands. Wildlife can be seen along the banks of the Mara River and visitors can view the annual spectacle of the half a million migrating wildebeest. Commonly spotted wildlife include a multitude of plains game such as buffalo, zebra, gazelles, impala, giraffe as well as lion and leopard. Visitors can look forward to bird watching, hot air ballooning, game safaris and guided bush walks.

ROOM CONFIGURATION

There are twelve stone and thatch rooms, raised on wooden decking and all en-suite. Three have an adjoining twin room for children, sharing the bathroom. Each en-suite room is open-fronted, with mosquito netting that can be zipped closed, and canvas roll-downs if needed. There are canopied mosquito nets over the beds.

The bathrooms are enclosed by heavy netting, and contain a generous shower with hot and cold running water (provided by a solar system), and flush toilet. Each room has a comfy day bed and chairs for relaxing on the verandah.
