Jack’s Camp / Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

Jack’s Camp is a beacon of style and comfort in the middle of Botswana’s Kalahari Desert. Blending into the oasis of palms, the authentic, 1940’s style tented safari camp, includes a private museum, shop, iconic tea tent and a pool pavilion. Spectacular vistas, creative surprises, expert guiding, old world safari styling and superb cuisine all come together to create an experience that is completely unique. The camp features 7 twin and 3 double tents with en suite bathrooms, as well as indoor and private outdoor showers.

Set in the heart of the dry savanna of northeastern Botswana, the Makgadikgadi Pan is the world’s largest network of salt pans stretching over 3,900 square kilometres and formed on the bed of the ancient Makgadikgadi Lake that began evaporating eons ago. Visiting Makgadikgadi is a unique salt desert experience: in the dry season, this vast expanse of sun-baked salt glistens in the light and when the rains come, the pan is home to a cornucopia of flamingos and other waterbirds, as well as one of Africa’s biggest zebra populations, whose annual migration is a wonder to behold. Visitors can immerse themselves in the stark beauty of this incredible landscape.

ACTIVITIES

Year-round activities include interaction with habituated meerkats, walking with Bushmen guides, game drives, horse riding safaris, bird watching and night drives – all in this unique desert environment. During the dry season activities include quad-biking across vast expanse of the salt pans whilst the wet season bears witness to the spectacular zebra and wildebeest migration. Helicopter rides over the salt pans are also available to view the countless flamingo flocks creating a magnificent pink spectacle.

Little Vumbura/Okavango Delta

This small, intimate camp embodies all that is best about the Okavango Delta – breathtaking beauty, remote, peaceful island location, abundant game and varied landscapes. Add in the warm hospitality of the people of this region – who are stakeholders in the ecotourism success story of the Okavango – and you have a winning (and beautiful) combination.

With access to varied, game-rich habitats, this six-tented camp nestles beneath the trees of an ancient island forest. A floating jetty connects land with water, and the wildlife experience can include sightings of sable and wild dog. Float along a crystal-clear Okavango waterway by mokoro as you scan for reed frogs and waterlilies. The hot air balloon safari is another highlight for seeing wildlife from new heights!

Situated in the northwestern corner of Botswana, the Okavango Delta is a World Heritage Site as it is the largest inland delta in the world. Visitors can enjoy a number of wonderful activities such as game viewing, fishing, bird watching or taking an authentic guided Mokoro excursion through this wetland paradise in a traditional dugout canoe. Savuti Camp / Linyanti Concessions

Savuti provides a front-row seat to amazing wildlife viewing and the mysteries of the ebb and flow of the Savute Channel waters. Perched high on the banks of the Channel, the camp looks down on a miraculous ribbon of territory that has been both savannah and river over the last few years.

Whether experienced in a dry, wet or transitional phase, the area has always been renowned for its game viewing. It holds a magnetic attraction for elephants, amongst other plains game and predators. Large canvas-and-thatch rooms (including a family unit) face the channel, and activities vary with the changes in the landscape.

The Kwando-Linyanti river system is home to a series of private game reserves, known for their exotic animal species and luxury safari options. An abundance of wildlife roams freely between the woodland habitats, ancient floodplains and forests that make up these lush, unfenced reserves. The big game in this area increases dramatically during the dry season when the area hosts large herds of impala, blue wildebeest, giraffe and buffalo as well as the world’s highest density of elephant. Several packs of wild dog are found in the area and lion, leopard and cheetah are frequently sighted. Night drives allow for the discovery of nocturnal creatures such as civets, genets, honey badgers and spring hares. This vast, untamed wilderness is the perfect location for those seeking a unique African adventure in an exclusive and remote big game habitat.

ACTIVITIES

INSIDER’S TIP: Get up close to elephants at the camp’s log-pile hide and watch as they play and quench their thirst at the water pan. Other activities include:

  • Day and night game drives
  • Nature walks
  • Log-pile and sunken hides
  • Star beds/sleep outs
  • Boat excursions
  • Catch and release fishing
  • Birding
