Old Mondoro Camp/Lower Zambezi

Old Mondoro is set in a grove of Acacia trees that tower above the massive elephant bulls that feed on them. On the banks of the Zambezi River in the Lower Zambezi National Park, this is a beautiful and remote site overlooking a maze of hippo-inhabited islands and channels. With only 5 rooms, 10 beds, Old Mondoro is the Lower Zambezi’s most intimate and private safari camp.

Old Mondoro’s setting is exquisite, one of the few safari camps with views in all directions, from one’s chair – to the south the spectacular Zambezi river and its islands sprinkled with wildlife, swivel around to face north and see beautiful woodland full of towering trees dwarfing the impalas, waterbuck, buffalo and elephants. A fun addition is Old Mondoro’s outdoor “loo with a view” overlooking the Zambezi and its wildlife. If you wish to be truly immersed in nature but with all the comforts then look no further than Old Mondoro.

Located on the Zimbabwean border in the southern reaches of Zambia, the Lower Zambezi region is best known as the home to the Lower Zambezi National Park which features exceptional, undeveloped wildlife areas. It is renowned for its abundant game and a variety of different wildlife can be spotted such as hippos, buffalo, crocodiles, fish eagles and herds of elephants. Chamilandu Bushcamp/South Luangwa National Park

Chamilandu is a breathtaking camp on one of the South Luangwa’s prime river locations, perfect for a bird’s-eye view of the wildlife that the river and its lagoons attract. There are just three stilted chalets at this exclusive camp, set on the riverbank beneath a soaring ebony grove. Each has its own raised veranda to loll on during the heat of the day, and an open-fronted en-suite bathroom with the same magnificent views over the tranquil waters. Two of the tree-houses are twins (2 queen-sized beds) and one is a double (king-sized bed). With capacity for just six guests, this is the perfect camp for small groups. Guests can enjoy a sundowner from the comfort of the thatched bar and dining area, as they watch the wildlife do the same at the river.

ACTIVITIES

Walking safaris and game drives around Chamilandu are an ideal way to explore the impressive range of habitats in the area. With seven oxbow lagoons behind camp, there are always thirsty animals around seeking refreshment. The resident hide looks out over one of these lagoons and is the perfect place to take lunch, tea, or to while away an afternoon in a hammock to the soundtrack of a bathing elephant.

ROOM CONFIGURATION

Traditional décor adorns the 2-meter high tree house chalets (only 3 chalets in camp). The tasteful blend of wrought iron and brass offsets the thatch and wood that welcome you to recline and relax. Black mosquito netting allows guests to retain an uninterrupted view of the Luangwa River and Chindeni Hills at night under the moonlight and stars above. Open to a 180° vista, each tree house provides an exciting frame of the surrounding Luangwa Valley. The four-poster beds enjoy a bird’s eye view over the Luangwa River and the abundant wildlife that has made the valley famous. With the magnificent Chindeni Hills as the backdrop for your view, Chamilandu affords you the majesty of Africa in all its forms. Outdoor bathrooms adjoin each chalet with a large shower and double vanities under the open sky.

Sundowners in the river and bush dinners are popular additions to the itinerary for Kapamba stays.
